Praying the Psalms

Praying the Psalms involves using the biblical book of Psalms as a guide for prayer, either by reading them aloud and letting the words become your own, or by using them as a starting point for personal reflection and conversation with God. You can do this by praying through the entire Psalter regularly, picking individual verses, or using different prayer methods like the ACTS acronym (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) with a specific psalm. The goal is to allow the language of the Psalms to shape your heart and mind, providing words for praise, lament, and petition in every circumstance.

Here is a good Psalm to start your day:

Psalm 40:1-4 – “I waited patiently for the Lord; he inclined to me and heard my cry. He drew me up from the pit of destruction, out of the miry bog and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure. He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. Many will see and fear, and put their trust in the LORD. Blessed is the man who makes the LORD his trust, who does not turn to the proud, to those who go astray after a lie!”
