I am to LOVE my enemies. (Matthew 5:43-44) “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you…”
This involves being kind to them. (Galatians 5:22-23a) “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, KINDNESS, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control…”
Yes, Christians are called to be marked by kindness, viewing it as a core expression of God’s love, a Fruit of the Spirit and a reflection of Jesus’s character, demonstrated through compassionate actions, gentle words, and humble service to others, even enemies, as commanded in the Bible. This involves embodying love in action, showing mercy, patience, and humility, and serving as a light to the world by living out God’s grace.
Even President Trump, of which I need to remind myself of this regularly.
(1 Peter 2:13-17) “Be subject for the Lord’s sake to every human institution, whether it be to the emperor as supreme, or to governors as sent by him to punish those who do evil and to praise those who do good. For this is the will of God, that by doing good you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish people. Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God. Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor.”
Some of my brothers in Christ have told me that this command from Peter under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit does not apply to Americans because we don’t have an emperor. Let us not belabor this. YES it does apply to we Americans. Whether it is Regan, Obama, Biden, or Trump I am to HONOR them.
