Doing the Work of the Spirit.

The Contemporary “church” is doing the work that should be the work of the Holy Spirit alone. The church sponsored Easter egg hunt is an example of this. I have been told different reasons for this practice, but the reason that is almost always offered is to attract unbelievers who otherwise wouldn’t attend a church function.

This reason brings to mind what Charles Spurgeon said, “If men will not come to hear us because we preach the gospel, draw them by no other means.” In the times I have had the privilege to be the messenger of the gospel, the person to whom I have been sent has been prepared by God the Holy Spirit to obey it.

The Ethiopian eunuch(Acts 8:26-40) is an example of this. He was reading Isaiah. It is safe to assume since he had traveled to Jerusalem to worship God, that this wasn’t the first time he’d read the Old Testament Scriptures. This time however, the Spirit divinely intervened prompting him to ask Philip to whom the portion of Scripture he probably had read many times before, was referring. I call this being ripe for the harvest.

The “church’s” competition with secular functions, E.g. Easter, Halloween, and Christmas in an effort to woo unbelievers is interfering with the Holy Spirit’s work, and is doing only harm and no good.

If my Father is willing, I will address in future posts what it is we can and should be doing.
