Interestingly, “Chariots of Fire” is not easily found on streaming websites like Netflix. In my mind, and my children will tell you it’s growing weaker by the day, “Chariots of Fire” is the best “Christian” movie. Eric Liddell simply did not run in the 1924 Olympic 100 meter final because it took place on Sunday. He made this decision knowing it would cost him a chance to win gold in the 100m. He didn’t ask for an exception or file a protest. Later he was able to participate in the 400m and won the gold medal.
I offer the following exhortation knowing there is much to be cleaned up in my life. I would advise today’s parents of under 18’s to follow the example of Eric Liddell. Take your children to worship God with the “Church” on Sundays. Yes, it could cost them a starting role and playing time. Like Eric Liddell, don’t make a fuss over this consequence. It is my contention that if all Christians would do this the club leagues would have to rethink Sunday play because of the lack of participants. If not, teaching and modeling God first, and everything else 2nd will serve them better as adults.
(Isaiah 58:13-14)
“If you turn away your foot from the Sabbath/Sunday, from doing your pleasure on My holy day, and call Sunday a delight, the holy day of the Lord honorable, and shall honor Him, not doing your own ways, nor finding your own pleasure, nor speaking your own words, then you shall delight yourself in the Lord; and I will cause you to ride on the high hills of the earth, and feed you with the heritage of Jacob, your father. The mouth of the Lord has spoken.”
