I noticed an individual I knew to be a believer was not eating and drinking when the Lord’s Supper was observed. I asked them about this. Their answer, “I don’t want to risk eating and drinking judgement against myself and possibly die.” (1 Corinthians 11:29-30) “For he who eats and drinks in an unworthy manner eats and drinks judgment to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body. For this reason many are weak and sick among you, and many sleep.”
Many times those administering the Lord’s Supper will interpret what Paul wrote in verse 28, “But let a man examine himself…” to require self examination of our sin(s). Some qualify this exhortation with if your sin is willful then it would be best to refrain from consuming the elements.
A common practice of the early Church was a “Love Feast.” Early Christians often held these meals in conjunction with the Lord’s Supper. These gatherings were designed to foster community, brotherhood, and mutual love. They provided sustenance for the poor and served as a time for prayer, singing, and strengthening. Paul was only referring to those members who ate selfishly while others went hungry, violating the spirit of the gathering. Paul’s wrap up in (1 Corinthians 11:33-34) makes this clear. “Therefore, my brethren, when you come together to eat, wait for one another. But if anyone is hungry, let him eat at home, lest you come together for judgment. And the rest I will set in order when I come.”
