Woe to Me Who Dares to Teach

(James 3:1) Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, because you know that we will be judged more strictly.

What James writes here under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit is almost always on my mind when writing, “God’s Word to the Wise.” Who am I to dare teach others what God has revealed in His Scriptures?

Determining a Call to Preach and Teach

Key Indicators of a Divine Calling

To discern if one is called by God to preach and teach, consider the following essential factors:

  • Aptitude to Teach: This is a fundamental requirement outlined in the New Testament for church elders (1 Tim. 3:2). A person must demonstrate the ability to effectively communicate biblical truths.
  • Desire to Communicate God’s Word: A genuine passion for sharing the message of the Gospel is crucial. This desire should stem from a heart committed to serving God and His people.
  • Commitment to Biblical Truth: A strong adherence to Scripture and a dedication to its teachings are vital. This commitment ensures that the message preached aligns with God’s Word.

Additional Considerations

  • Spiritual Maturity: Assessing one’s spiritual growth and understanding of Scripture can provide insight into their readiness for this calling.
  • Community Affirmation: Often, the church community plays a role in recognizing and affirming an individual’s calling. Feedback from fellow believers can be invaluable.
  • Prayer and Reflection: Engaging in prayer and seeking God’s guidance is essential. This spiritual practice helps clarify one’s sense of purpose and direction.

Women are never to preach, but can teach children and other women. (1 Timothy 2:12-14)  I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet. For Adam was formed first, then Eve; and Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor. Some argue that it was a cultural taboo, but Paul states clearly his command was the consequence for Eve’s sin.
