God Blessed MY Broken Roads

Listening to the Song, God Bless the Broken Road” performed by Boyce Avenue, brought to mind the spring and summer of 1976. A team of US players was preparing to play a number of friendlies in Europe. They needed a goalie. My college soccer coach recommended me. There was a tryout at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville during the spring. Afterwards I was invited to be on the team. Once classes ended I began practicing with the team. After I was invited I applied and received my first passport. That summer I had moved into a Student Center in Lookout Mt. Tenn. My days were busy beyond what seemed manageable. There was a girl who had graduated working answering phones in the office in the Great Hall. She began making plans to follow me around Europe so we could see the sights between matches. It was all set with Poland as the first stop. Now some of you are wondering what does any of this have to do with the song, “God Bless the Broken Road?” Sparing the details, I was experiencing severe depression and just before I was to leave for Poland I packed my stuff and drove home to Iowa. I abandoned the team and the girl. Well God blessed the broken road that lead me to Victoria later that fall of 76’. The girl met her husband that year also. There were a few more broken roads, but God showed me that He wasn’t going to share His glory with me. Things would have been better had I not started down the wrong roads, seeking the praise and adoration of others, but God didn’t give up on me. God Fixed the Broken Roads that lead me straight to Him.
